Many people use the SMART acronym to take a systematic approach to planning and measuring progress, while others use an accountability partner or coach to keep them on the right track. I’ll proceed.

I’ve personally used both techniques, but this year I’m going to take a different approach that feels less overwhelming and demanding.

So what’s the big plan?

It’s very simple, just take small steps every day. Create small daily positive habitsIt not only benefits your business but also empowers your mind.

Here are eight daily habits that will help you nurture and grow your business.

1. Connect with one new person every day

“Sometimes reaching out and taking someone’s hand is the beginning of a journey.” - Vera Nazarian

Every day, we have multiple opportunities to connect with other humans, from email conversations to social media to in-person interactions while running errands. During times like these, make a conscious effort to reach out to someone and get to know them. There is no need to sell yourself in these encounters. Just be genuinely interested in the other person. The question “What do you do?” will naturally arise, and thanks to your friendly and sincere attitude, people who are interested in what you have to offer will come to you openly.

2. Accept your weaknesses

“Let go of the need to be and accept the need to be who you are.” - Author unknown

Even the best people have weaknesses. The trick is to focus on your strengths and embrace your weaknesses. Focusing on your weaknesses will only drain your precious energy and create a negative cycle of thinking. But when you acknowledge and accept your flaws, you can move on, develop areas where you shine, and create positive thought patterns and the secret to success.

3. Reflect on your successes

“Think not about past misfortunes, which everyone has to some extent, but about present blessings, which everyone has to some extent.” -Charles Dickens

As they say, “We are our own worst enemies.” No one judges us as harshly as we judge ourselves. Take a few minutes each day to reflect on what you accomplished over the past week, month, and year. Reminding yourself of your accomplishments not only helps you appreciate what you’re doing, but also helps you maintain forward momentum.

4. Plant the seeds

“The more you read, the more you know. The more you learn, the more places you can go.” -Dr. Seuss

Make a list of 12 business books you want to read next year. Reading is not only a great and inexpensive way to stimulate your brain, but it also improves your vocabulary and comprehension skills, and introduces you to ideas, people, and information you wouldn’t have otherwise known.

5. Breathe, relax, and unplug

“Work is not always necessary. There is such a thing as sacred laziness.” -George MacDonald

Part of being an entrepreneur is knowing when to say no and when to back off. For entrepreneurs, having a business is like having a child for most people. We often get so caught up in working and achieving our goals that we forget why we started a business in the first place (more flexibility and freedom). Don’t forget to take regular vacations and breaks as well as spend time with family and friends. Breathing allows your body and mind time to recharge and recover.

6. Be grateful

“When you feel grateful for someone or something in your life, you actually attract more of the things you appreciate and value into your life.” -Christian Northrup

Take time each day to write down a few things you are grateful for. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude improves your overall outlook on life and allows you to be more optimistic about the future. Needless to say, people are attracted to people who have a more positive outlook on life.

7. Nurture your mind, body, and spirit

“We have the gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. We can’t accept it and put it away in the cupboard or just think it’ll take care of itself. We can’t water it. You have to keep doing it, you have to really take care of it and nurture it.” -John Lennon

Make time for yourself. You need time to restore yourself mentally, physically, and emotionally, whether it’s by taking a walk, taking a long bath, or setting aside time for meditation or exercise. Too often we put others before ourselves, which leaves us exhausted. When you take the time to nurture yourself, you can give more to your business and to other people in your life.

8. Make a plan

“If you don’t prepare, you’re preparing to fail.” -Benjamin Franklin

Whether you want to create yearly goals, a daily to-do list, or a monthly schedule, you need a roadmap to achieve those goals. Without a plan, your business will not run smoothly, your efforts will be diluted, and success will be nearly impossible.
